NJ gubernatorial candidate Ras Baraka was arrested by ICE Friday May 9th 2025 in front of the Delaney Hall ICE Detention Center in Newark, NJ after himself other officials responsible for oversight of the facility were threatened with trespassing for being on property.
Baraka was with U.S. Representatives Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica Melver, and Rob Menendez. These were members of a congressional delegation carrying out the due diligence of their oversight responsibilities of the facility by showing up for a tour. Federal facilities must adhere to strict standards and procedures in order to ensure proper compliance with individual rights and the laws of the United States.
The charges for Baraka were dropped by the Trump Administration, but Representative Mclver was charged with assaulting and impeding federal officers following the escalation by ICE agents and the Trump Administration.
“We’re not asking for anything that’s incorrect. We ask them to obey our laws, to obey the policies and rules here in the city and state of New Jersey,” Baraka said.
The charges against McIver are still in place, which makes Baraka’s lawsuit more crucial in the Democratic effort to properly oversee federal facilities that are under criticism for illegal practices in their treatment of community members.
Baraka was held for four to five hours after his arrest, spending most of the evening under ICE custody.
