Exploring Burlesque with LGBTQ+ Author and Drag Star

Ryan Mathew Schulz was born in Perth, Western Australia 1988.

As a graduate of John Curtin College of the Arts and a lover of all things theatrical, growing up in the worldโ€™s most isolated city made Ryan fascinated with life outside the borders of WA – as did the stories of Mr. Stephen King! Holding 8 years of a career as a drag queen, they tossed aside the wigs to tap into other artforms, discovering circus, burlesque, and cabaret through the Fringe World Festival.

Relocating to London in March 2017, to further pursue the arts, Ryan held 5 solid years working in those industries and now, works in commercial theatre on the West End. They enjoy writing stories that bring people into the sparkly glimmering worlds they’ve been part of, giving readers a taste of some fabulousness and grit!

“Filament Lit Nights” invites you to wonder what it would feel like to leave everything you ever knew behind. To start a fresh and bloody life. A young man named Thomas arrives at the Cliffs of Dover, readying to end his life, when his attention is drawn to bright filament lit lights strung around a funfair, and a large thick striped black and white big top. There, a cast of vampires offers Thomas an extraordinary and intriguing future, filled with confidence, strength, newfound independence, sex, self-discovery and blood. A modern-day travelling vaudeville made up of vampires – travelling and seeking the misfits of the society.

โ€œSounds around the big top soon filled with screams, tears, POP and CRACK! The orderly and conformed humanity to which theyโ€™d entered in on was all too quickly unravelled as hidden away truths were confronted โ€“ their deep and buried animalistic like natures rose to the surface in a reactive response of fight or
flight.โ€

โ€œThey each looked out to the sea. All from different walks of life, but now all on the same path and with that of the same curse. It was a curse, but it was not holding any of them back. In actual fact, it had brought each of them together. They were now each as individuals, stronger for it.โ€
